FAQ

Q: What is the difference between CNC turning and Swiss CNC machining?

CNC turning uses a fixed headstock and is best suited for shorter parts and larger diameters — typically above 32mm. Swiss CNC machining uses a sliding headstock and guide bushing to support the workpiece close to the cutting tool, making it ideal for long, slender, tight-tolerance parts under 32mm. Fairchild offers both capabilities, and our team can recommend the right process for your part geometry.

Q: Can Fairchild handle both turning and milling on the same part?

Yes. Our multi-axis CNC turning centers can perform turning, milling, drilling, and threading operations in a single setup, eliminating secondary operations and reducing per-part cost and cycle time. This is particularly valuable for complex components that would otherwise require multiple machines and multiple setups.

Q: What production volumes does CNC turning support at Fairchild?

Our CNC turning operations are optimized for production runs in the thousands of parts — ideal for Tier 2 suppliers and OEMs with consistent ongoing demand. We offer blanket order programs with flexible release schedules, allowing you to lock in pricing and capacity for the year while releasing quantities based on your production needs.

Multi-Axis CNC Advantages

Single-Setup Manufacturing

Simultaneous 5-axis machining eliminates multiple setups, reducing handling and tolerance stack-up while enabling complex geometries impossible with conventional 3-axis operations.

Superior Surface Quality

Advanced toolpath programming and cutting strategies deliver exceptional surface finishes, often eliminating secondary operations while maintaining dimensional accuracy.

Large Component Expertise

Specialized capabilities for components up to 6.00″ diameter that exceed Swiss turning limits, maintaining the same precision standards across all part sizes.

Scalable Production Solutions

Optimized processes from prototype through medium production runs with consistent quality and competitive pricing across varying quantities.
